The VACEP Leadership & Advocacy Fellowship is designed to develop early-career emergency physicians into leaders in emergency medicine. The fellowship combines elements of mentoring with skills in organization, education, advocacy, and involvement.

The key components of the VACEP Leadership & Advocacy Fellowship include:

  • Providing leadership development through mentorship, VACEP Board of Directors participation, and advocacy-related projects.

  • Giving early career emergency physicians opportunities to participate in and lead state and national advocacy efforts on behalf of emergency physicians and their patients.

  • Establishing and developing relationships with state and national leaders in emergency medicine and health policy.

CRITERIA FOR fellowship acceptance

Any member of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (VACEP) may nominate himself/herself or another resident member for this award.

EPs currently doing or planning to do other fellowships are eligible.

To be eligible for the Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Current member in good standing of VACEP

  • Minimum of 3 years of membership in ACEP or EMRA

  • Completed an emergency medicine residency within 10 years or will complete residency this year. Current final-year EM residents are eligible to apply (Fellowship would start after residency graduation)

roles and responsibilities

The VACEP Leadership & Advocacy Fellow will attend and participate in the following:

  • Use the Fellowship travel stipend to attend VACEP events in person, whenever possible. Review the VACEP calendar before applying.

  • At least 3/4 VACEP Board of Directors meetings (Time required: 3 morning/early afternoon in-person meetings in Richmond)

  • VACEP Legislative Affairs Committee

  • VACEP Advocacy Day in January in Richmond (Time required: Full weekday)

  • At least one legislative hearing at which VACEP is testifying (Time required: Several hours)

  • Annual ACEP Leadership & Advocacy Conference in late April/early May (Time required: 3 days)

  • ACEP Council Meeting at ACEP’s annual conference as an Alternate Councillor

  • Complete a project designed in coordination with the Legislative Affairs Committee and the Fellowship Mentor

APPLICATION process

The application process is competitive. Applicants will be chosen by the VACEP Board of Directors based on their contributions to the emergency medicine community and their demonstrated potential for future emergency medicine leadership.

Upon selection, VACEP will match the Leadership & Advocacy Fellow with a mentor from the Board of Directors.

VACEP will award a stipend of $1,500 per Fellow.
